I started the treatment immediately as recommended by the doctor. It consisted of interferon and some injections three times weekly. I continued the treatments for 3 months and my white blood cells had gone so much low that the treatments had to be terminated. I was fed up

After that I just tried to pretend and not acknowledge the fact that I had hepatitis B. 

A few years later, someday I was listening  to a health Radio program on Nigeria Info(99.3FM) wherein, hepatitis B was brought up as the topic and they started comparing it with other types of sexually transmitted diseases.

The Medical expert guest explained and emphasized the dangers of Hepatitis and how slow it can be until it graduates to Liver failure and then liver cancer and at this stage it kills faster.

He narrated how some of his patients later died due to them not having money for liver transplant after their cases had worsened and could not respond to the usual treatment again.

I  got so scared and frightened as I felt I was the main reason the program was aired that very day. I decided that I had to get rid of this disease and couldn’t continue my life with it.

Then I went to the hospital again, I got my Biospy done and discovered my condition has gotten so chronic and I was halfway to having cirrhosis and I had  to try the treatments again. So I started interferon again. It was not long after I started again that I started experiencing some usual symptoms but were more aggravated.

I was constantly tired, having some flu-like symptoms, stomach and joint pains. It was supposed to be a year treatment, I combined interferon and some other medications.

It was really painful, I was constantly tired, weak, and always feeling ill and all I ever wanted was to go away from it.

About 2 months later, I strolled to my doctor, May God bless him, he’s kind and always wanted to see me regularly and call me on phone to keep encouraging me as he didn’t want any funny thought(You know!) to cross my mind.

On this day, it was my lucky day, I met one of his doctor-friends in his office. He introduced me to him and also introduced him to me as a Senior Medical doctor in one of our Teaching Hospitals. He narrated to him my pathetic journey on this Hepatitis and how he had advised me to quickly source for money in order to be booked for liver transplant.

It was at this point I heard this Senior doctor telling his friend(my doctor) that most times now, Hepatitis is not responsive to chemicalized drugs and interferon injections, especially if they have been administered for a long time on the patient.
